The Help Easily Dominates The Box Office

If you haven't read the Kathryn Stockett best-seller The Help, go to the bookstore, buy it, and READ IT. Then you'll be ready to go see the film adaptation (starring Emma Stone and Viola Davis) that has been dominating the Box Office over the past two weekends.

The film took the top spot this weekend, grossing a strong $20.5 million it it's second week of release, pushing its two-week total to an impressive $71.8 million.

The Help has been getting rave reviews from critics, and is poised to be one of the biggest movies of the year. It's gotten such good buzz that it was able to hold off 4 new films this weekend!

Bridesmaids Delivers the Laughs (and the $$)

If you didn't have time to go see the new Kristen Wiig/Maya Rudolf comedy Bridesmaids this weekend, get up off the couch, grab your keys, and GO.

The female-ensemble lead cast deliver huge laughs, and is one of the funniest comedies to come out this year. And it seems that audiences approve, since the film grossed $24 million at the box office this weekend.

It's great to see a comedy starring tons of funny women, dealing with not just funny situations but also the ins and outs of relationships between women.

This is Kristen Wiig's breakout role, and boy does she deliver. The SNL funny woman doesn't carry the film (there are tons of hilarious characters, including Melissa McCarthy who steals a lot of the scenes as the, um, quirky Megan), but her hilarious yet vulnerable performance is sure to help catapult her to the Amy Poehler-Tina Fey stratosphere.

Another Down Weekend at the Box Office

Well, either people are sick of going to the movies, or Hollywood's just been turning out a crap load of crap...or maybe it's a combo of both!

We saw another lame weekend at the Box Office, with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules claiming the top spot with a reported $24.4 million. That's not a terrible first weekend-haul, but it's the film that came in at the #2 spot that was really the big disappointment.

Zack Snyder's much hyped Sucker Punch proved that even with a fury of CGI booms and bangs and hot girl fighting action, it doesn't always equal Box Office gold.

The film earned only $19 million, meaning it'll have a tough time making back it's reported $80 million budget.

To date, only 2 films have crossed the $100 million mark this year - Adam Sandler's much maligned Just Go With It and the top grossing film of the year? Rango.

Yup, it's been that bad of a year. Let's hope the summer blockbusters (Green Lantern, Thor, The Hangover 2) create some friction or Hollywood's on BIG trouble!

Bradley Cooper Delivers in Limitless

Bradley Cooper's latest flick Limitless was released the weekend, and to much buzz and fairly decent reviews, and after seeing the film I can now say that all the hype was well worth it!

The movie (which topped this weekend's box office with a cool $19 million) follows Cooper's character Eddie, a struggling down in the dumps writer who gets his hands on a pill that allows him to utilize 100% off his brain (SICK concept!!).

Obviously drama ensues blah blah blah....

But in all seriousness, it was a really good movie! Cooper and costar Robert De Niro are a super bro-dude combo that sizzles on screen, and the fact that the former Mr. Renee Zellweger is shirtless (and pants-less at one point) definitely draws in the female (and gay) demographic.

So definitely check out the movie, for some good ol' fashion big screen fun!!

The Roommate #1 in Another Dreary Box Office Weekend

In another blah weekend at the Box Office, Leighton Meester's horror flick The Roommate came out on top with a reported $15.6 million.

The debut is not bad for the film, which had a budget of around $16 million, but it was another down weekend for the U.S. box office, that hasn't seen any big numbers in months.

Coming in behind The Roommate is the James-Cameron-produced Sanctum, which earned only $9.2 million, (a far cry from the record-breaking Avatar, but then again, there weren't any sexually active blue aliens in this flick.

True Grit Tops Box Office

True Grit, the latest film from the Coen brothers (and a remake of the classic Western novel), topped this weekend's box office with a reported $15 million. The film is now the Coen brother's biggest hit, grossing over $110 million domestically, and should continue to do well through awards season.

The film, starring Jeff Bridges, was strong enough to fend off Little Fockers, the latest installment in the Meet the Parents franchise, and Gwyneth Paltrow's latest flick Country Strong.

Speaking of Country Strong, the film saw its first full weekend of wide released, grossing $7.3 million - good, considering the movie's reported budget of $12.5 million.

Elsewhere this weekend, Nicolas Cage scored another sub par debut with another sub par movie, as his Season of the Witch came in at #3 with $10.7 million. Cage has been releasing a crap load of crappy movies this year (does Sorcerer's Apprentice ring a bell?), which I guess is good since he has a lot of bills to pay.

Fright Fest at the Box Office

It was no surprise that the latest installment in the Saw franchise took the top spot at the Box Office this Halloween Weekend, with Saw 3D grossing a reported $24.2 million, a vast improvement over last year's Saw VI, which opened with $14.1 million.

Another fright fest film was in the runner-up spot, as Paranormal Activity grossed $16.5 million in its second weekend, bringing its 2-week total to $65.7 million.

I have yet to see the last Paranormal film, but from what I've read/heard, it's decent, but there's a lot of the same ol' creaky-door-footsteps-stuff that was in the first one.

Steroids Win at the Box Office

Forget Muscley-Juicehead-Guido's, this weekend at the box office it was all about the muscley-juicehead-old guys.

Sylvester Stallone's testosterone-heavy film The Expendables took the top spot at the box office this weekend, earning a hefty $35 million dollars, enough to force Julia Roberts' comeback film Eat, Pray, Love to a runner-up debut.

While both films clearly had different target markets, (70% of EPL audience members were female), there was more of a mixed crowd who went to see Stallone, along with aged (but classic) action stars like Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke blow shit up.

Will Ferrell Finally Has A Hit Movie

It's been a while, but it has finally happened.

Will Ferrell is starring in a hit movie again! The funny man's new flick The Other Guys co-starring Mark Wahlberg took the top spot at the Box Office this weekend with a reported $35.6 million.

I was starting to worry there that Mr. Ron Burgundy might not be able to pull the audiences in like he used to, but this proves that he's still got it!

Inception was pushed to #2 after three solid weeks on top and a total gross $228 million, becoming the 6th highest grossing film of the year so far.

Toy Story Dominates Box Office

It appears as if an eleven year break in between movies didn't scare off any fans, as Toy Story 3 grossed a staggering $109 million at the box office this weekend, becoming the biggest opener for a June movie EVER.

That hefty sum is also the third biggest opener for an animated film in history, just behind Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. The film is expected to make around $400 million domestically, and is already getting some serious Oscar buzz!!

Congrats to Pixar, who have delivered each time with their fantastic films!

Kick-Ass Gets Ass-Kicked at the Box Office

The new R-rated superhero comedy Kick Ass tanked at the box office this weekend, earning just $19 million since its release on Friday.

Industry experts were predicting earlier last week that the movie could pull in as much as $35 million, with all of the good buzz and reviews its been getting. But alas, it just wasn't meant to be.

The film had to settle for the #2 spot, with 3-D pic How to Train your Dragon reclaiming the top spot with $20 million earned and a total haul of $158.6 million.

Tina Fey and Steve Carell's Date Night slipped to #3 with $17.3 million and an overhaul gross of $49.2 million.

I still want to see Kick-Ass, despite its poor showing. Did anyone see it? Thoughts?

Avatar Becomes 2nd Highest Grossing Movie EVER

James Cameron's epic film Avatar has already become the second highest grossing movie of all time around the world.

The film was released only about 5 weeks ago, but has held onto the #1 position at the box office ever since. It's domestic gross has surpassed the $400 million mark, but its global revenue has reached an astounding $1.3 BILLION.

That's HUGE. It helps though that most screenings of the film are in 3-D, which result in higher ticket cost, but still this is remarkable.

The #1 movie of all time coincidentally is another Cameron film; his 1997 classic Titanic has sat comfortably at the top since its release, with an estimated $1.83 billion in worldwide gross.

This got me thinking about what other films made the top 10 all-time worldwide box office, so I looked around and found the list. Check it out:

Old School Disney Earns OK Box Office

The Princess and the Frog, Disney's first old fashioned princess film in a decade, took the #1 spot at the box office this weekend, grossing a so-so $25 million.

That's a decent number for a princess movie of this caliber (Mulan grossed $22.7 million during its first week...but that was in 1998) but falls way short of the company's new CGI cash cows like Up, which had a $68 million opener.

Still, the film was able to beat out Sandra Bullock's hit movie The Blind Side, (which fell to #2 this weekend), and the new Matt Damon flick Invictus, which came in at #3.

I do miss the good ol' days of classic Disney movies, when Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid were box office titans. I think it's because of all the great songs that came from these movies, that could be sung at the top of your lungs...

Bullock's Blind Side Beats New Moon

Sandra Bullock is having the best year in her nearly two decade long career, as she earns her second #1 movie in the past 12 months with The Blind Side.

After scoring a $100 million box office smash with The Proposal, Bullock's most recent flick which stars her as a rich southern wife who eventually adopts a super talented football playing teen from the ghetto, earned another $20.4 million this past weekend, good enough to move ahead of New Moon, which took in around $16 million.

Blind Side has been trailing New Moon for weeks, but has built up enough momentum to snag the top spot this week.

I happened to go see Bullock's new movie; it was two hours full of feel good greatness! Some critics say that this could be the film that earns Miss Congeniality her first Oscar nod, but I beg to differ. Bullock is not really the type of actress to get much critical claim, and this movie does stretch her acting chops a bit, but it's nothing to hoot and holler about.

Wild at #1

Where the Wild Things Are took the top spot at this weekend's box office, raking in an estimated $32.5 million from Friday to Sunday.

An interesting tid bit to note is that 43% of the audience that saw the movie was over 18, meaning that all the people who use to love the book went to relive a bit of their childhood!

Coming in at #2 was Law Abiding Citizen, with Jamie Foxx, grossing $21.3 million. I head the movie was terrible, I can't believe it made that much...

at #3 is the most talked about horror movie in many years, Paranormal Activity! The $11,000 movie grossed a HUGE $20.2 million this weekend, and looks to make even more with Halloween right around the corner!

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Still 'Rains' Supreme

This weekend's box office saw the family flick Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs hold on to the #1 spot, grossing another $24.6 million, leaving Bruce Willis' new film Surrogates and the remake of Fame in the dust.

The hype for Fame apparently didn't equal to a big opening weekend, with the film only taking in $10 million for a third place finish. Luckily, the film only cost about $18 million to make so it's pretty likely that they'll cover their budget in the long run.

The new Willis flick earned $15 million, good enough for second place, but probably won't earn back the reported $80 million budget it had.

Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story opened only in 4 theaters but made $240,000. The documentary will see a wide release next week. Kind of ironic that a film based on how crappy our economy is can make one big fat white man super rich!

Spidey 4 on the Way...Now is that Necessary?

A date has been set for the release of the 4th Spiderman movie, the film will be slinging into theaters on May 5th 2011. The studio has finally been able to secure stars Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst for the fourth (and final?) installment of the massively successful franchise, but to be honest, do we really want a 4th spiderman?

I stopped after #2, and I heard Spiderman 3 was nothing special, so I have to wonder why they are going ahead with another?

Well duh, for the $$$$!!!

Eonline reports that the first 3 films grossed a whopping $2.5 billion dollars worldwide, and since Maguire and Dunst haven't been in the spotlight lately, they probably need a paycheck!

Bullock Can't Beat Basterds

The long holiday weekend saw some new releases at the Box Office, but none were good enough to stop The Final Destination and Inglourious Basterds. Both films hang at #1 and #2, with Sandra Bullock's new film All About Steve having to settle for the #3 spot.

Even though the film has been panned by critics as one of the worst of the year (so far) Bullock still has strong box office mojo, as the movie grossed a decent $14 million. It probably helped that she is coming off the heels of her smash hit The Proposal, and Co-star Bradley Cooper is also starting to become a household name.

The Final Destination and Inglourious Basterds took in $15.4 and $15 million over the weekend, good enough for Basterds to almost hit the coveted $100 million mark.

Horror, Tarantino, Tops at Weekend Box Office

This past weekend saw two new horror films debut big, with The Final Destination and Halloween both arriving in the top 3.

The Final Destination grossed $28.3 million to take the #1 spot for the weekend, while Halloween took in an estimated $17.4 million to come in at #3. This is the biggest debut for a "Final Destination" movie, while the Rob Zombie directed Halloween becomes the second biggest opener in that franchise.

At #2 this weekend is Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, which grossed another $20 million to brings its two-week total to over $70 million.

Peter Jackson Back on Top

The Peter Jackson produce film District 9 took the #1 spot at the Box Office this weekend, raking in $37 million. The flick only cost $30 million to make so they are already in the green! The film has been getting great reviews, and I think people were excited to see another Jackson film, since he has been out of the spotlight for a while.

G.I. Joe fell to second place, while the Time Traveler's Wife came in at #3 with almost $20 million. Good to see Rachel McAdams back doin' her thang too!

Entourage star Jeremy Pivon saw his new movie The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard come in at a not so hot 6th place with $5.4 million.

On the plus side, last night's episode of Entourage was great!
