Caillat Hits #1

Singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat earns her first #1 album this week, as her sophomore set Breakthrough debuts at the top with over 100,000 copies sold. Her 2007 album Coco peaked at #5 but went on to sell over 2 million copies, thanks in part to her hit single "Bubbly".

So far 231.1 million albums have been sold this year, down a whopping 15% from last year at this time (270.8 million.)

With no huge debuts this year it looks like the music industry will have to find a way to revive the business, and with not many huge names dropping albums in the upcoming weeks, it looks like it may only get worse.

My issue is that nowadays you can sell a measly 100,000 copies of an album and debut at #1. It's ridiculous! A number like that 10 years ago would maybe get you in to the top 10, and if it was around the holidays you'd be lucky to see yourself in the top 25.

It's just sad how far the music industry has fallen. And as much as I love it and hope to work in the business someday, there needs to be a radical change so we can turn things around
