Grammy Predictions: Part 3

February 13th is creeping up on us, and in no time the Grammy Awards will be knockin' on our front door, with all of music's heavy hitters rubbing their miniature Snooki look alike troll for good luck.

This week's category that More Than Musiq will be looking at is Best New Artist. Here are the nominees:

Justin Bieber
Drake
Florence & The Machine
Mumford & Sons
Esperanza Spalding

Who Will Win: My money's on the new prince of hip hop, Drake. Not only is he well respected in the rap world and on the pop charts, but he's had 2 HUGE years, racking up a number of hit singles and a chart topping debut album.

Who Should Win: While I wouldn't be opposed to Drake taking home the trophy, I think both Florence & The Machine and Mumford & Sons should be recognized for bringing some originality and actual talent to a year in which auto-tune became the new vocal coach.

Unfortunately for Esperanza Spalding, NO ONE actually knows who she is. And for our boy Biebs I think that he's still got a couple more years to earn respect from his elders, but I wouldn't put it past the Grammys to simply hand the kid the prize for sheer ratings gold.

We'll just have to wait until February 13 to find out!!!

Pink's F**kin' Perfect is F**kin' Great!

Pink's been on a roll the last couple years, and although she hasn't released a new studio album in a while, the singles off her greatest hits collection continue to be solid hits!

"F**kin' Perfect" is the second release from Greatest Hits...So Far!!! following the #1 smash "Raise Your Glass", and it looks like the song is going to be another home run.

The mid-tempo ballad shows the (somewhat) softer side of pop's reigning bad girl, but it still contains that edge that we've come to know and love with the girl formally known as Alicia Moore.

The track is currently #1 on iTunes and should be a serious contender for the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 next week, which would give her back-to-back chart toppers.

What do you think of Pink's new song??

Adele Vs. Sophomore Slump = No Contest

Adele's 2008 debut 19 was an international phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide and earning her a gaggle of accolades, including 2 Grammys.

And now it looks like she's about to trounce the dreaded sophomore slump, with her latest single "Rolling in the Deep", and the upcoming release of her 2nd disc 21.

The song is soo insatiable, with Adele's husky, sensual vocals completing a track that will definitely be on many critics top 10 lists.

She even beat out our girl Britney on the UK singles chart, (although Miss Spears is still dominating the charts around the globe.)

Check out "Rolling in the Deep", and then go buy it on Itunes!!!

As Expected, But Still AMAZING: Britney #1

Well everyone has been predicting it, and now it FINALLY happened.

Britney Spears' latest single "Hold It Against Me" debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, selling a mind-boggling 411,000 digital copies this week, the best debut for a single by a female artist EVER.

Britney also becomes just the second artist in HISTORY to have multiple singles debut at #1 (2009's "3" was her other single to do so), sharing the spotlight only with Mariah Carey.

This is Brit Brit's 4th chart topper behind "3", "Womanizer", and the track that started it all, "...Baby One More Time."

This is a GREAT intro to Spears' upcoming 7th album, which promises more undeniably catchy dance-pop jams and classic Britney all the way.

Here's the rest of the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, but really, does it even matter?

1. Britney Spears "Hold It Against Me"

2. Bruno Mars "Grenade"

3. Katy Perry "Firework"

4. Rihanna Feat. Drake "What's My Name?"

5. Wiz Khalifa "Black and Yellow"

6. Enrique Iglesias "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)"

7. Ke$ha "We R Who We R"

9. The Black Eyed Peas "The Time (Dirty Bit)"

10. Bruno Mars "Just The Way You Are"

Chris Colfer = Golden Globe Winner!

This is SO Great!

Glee's Chris Colfer just won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series Musical or Comedy!!

He totally deserves it. His character Kurt is the most prominent gay figure on television right now, and he delivers an emotional performance every week. And in season two, where most of the scripts and story lines are a little dull and predictable, Colfer still packs an emotional punch as the only openly gay student who faces bullying and taunting every day.

Congrats!

AND on a different note...

This is More Than Musiq's 500th blog post!! I can't believe it's been over a year and a half since I first started writing this bad boy, but it's been so fun! Thanks to all who are reading!

I Like To "Do It Like A Dude"

My best gay Jack turned me on to this chica, and she has the possibility of breaking in the States pretttyy sooon!

Jessie J.'s single "Do It Like A Dude" is already a top 5 hit in her home country of the UK and I can definitely see it slithering on to North American soil. A rap-sung track somewhat reminiscent of Nicki Minaj, with a sharp bite and danceable beat.

Check out "Do It Like A Dude" and try to, um...do it like a dude?

FeFe Dobson Returns

Well...she was never actually here to begin with.

Do you remember back in 2003 (when TRL was still going strong), Fefe Dobson scored a modest hit with her single "Take Me Away", then pretty much fell off the face of the earth...aka she went back to Canada.

But she's been plugging away, trying to make it in the biz, and with her new single she may just have a chance yet!

"Stuttering" is a cute little pop gem, with a nice little hook and mid-tempo chorus. Dobson has always had a pretty strong voice, and this song displays her nice tone.

What do you think of "Stuttering"? Does Miz FeFe have a hit on her hands?

"Hold It Against Me" Premieres, and it DELIVERS

Ahhh!!

This is CLASSIC Britney!!

The Queen of Pop surprised everyone today by releasing her track to radio a day earlier than she claimed, but no one here is complaining!!

"Hold It Against Me" is a bona fide Dance/Pop SMASH (I mean, it's only a matter of time until it tops the Billboard Charts) and is almost guaranteed to be another smash for Spears.

We heard her demo earlier this week, but Britney's vocals make it all her own - There's no mistaking her nasally delivery, her sexy come-hither's, and the monster chorus that she delivers with ease.

Listen to "Hold It Against Me" NOW and DANCE DANCE DANCE!!

UPDATE: "Hold It Against Me" reached the #1 spot on Itunes in less than 12 hours, and in just 1 day is the 16th most played song on pop radio!!!!! She's got another MONSTER SMASH on her hands! Go Brit!

True Grit Tops Box Office

True Grit, the latest film from the Coen brothers (and a remake of the classic Western novel), topped this weekend's box office with a reported $15 million. The film is now the Coen brother's biggest hit, grossing over $110 million domestically, and should continue to do well through awards season.

The film, starring Jeff Bridges, was strong enough to fend off Little Fockers, the latest installment in the Meet the Parents franchise, and Gwyneth Paltrow's latest flick Country Strong.

Speaking of Country Strong, the film saw its first full weekend of wide released, grossing $7.3 million - good, considering the movie's reported budget of $12.5 million.

Elsewhere this weekend, Nicolas Cage scored another sub par debut with another sub par movie, as his Season of the Witch came in at #3 with $10.7 million. Cage has been releasing a crap load of crappy movies this year (does Sorcerer's Apprentice ring a bell?), which I guess is good since he has a lot of bills to pay.

Did you have a good weekend??

"Hold it Against Me" Hitting Airwaves on Tuesday!

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!

This is going to be HUGE.

Britney Spears has announced that her new single "Hold it Against Me" will hit the U.S. airwaves and Itunes store on 1/11/11, her first new release since "3" last year.

Demos have already leaked of the new track, and people are already saying it's going to be a massive hit, and I have to agree!!

"Hold it Against Me" is a an head banging club anthem, and should dominate radio in the upcoming months.

The artwork for the single has also been released, and Brit Brit looks Sexxiiiii!!!!!

I'm counting down the days until the official single is released, but it's KILLING me. Is it killing you!?!

Katy Perry: MTM's Entertainer of the Year

The votes have been tallied in the last More Than Musiq poll of 2010, where you picked the "Musical Entertainer of the Year", and the lady who scored the most votes has had quite a year.

Its KATY PERRY!!

Perry quickly squished the idea that she was just a one-trick pony and delivered a killer follow-up album to 2008's One of the Boys. In the poll she scored 40% of the votes, good enough to beat Rihanna (30%) and the Cast of Glee (20%) for the top spot.

2010 was very good to Mrs. Russell Brand, with the release of her sophomore album Teenage Dream, which debuted at #1 in the U.S. and produced THREE #1 singles - "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", and "Firework".

Perry also got engaged to funny man Brand, and nabbed 4 Grammy nominations, including the coveted Album of the Year.

I wonder if 2011 will be as good to Perry as 2010 was. We shall see!!

AND stay tuned for a new More Than Musiq poll, coming soon!!

What the Hell!? Avril Debuts New Single

It's been a while, but Avril Lavigne has FINALLY released a new single, and it's not bad!

In fact, I love it!

"What the Hell" is classic Lavigne - a sweet trifecta of pop/punk riffs, bratty lyrics, and Avril's signature snarling-yet-girly vocals.

Lavigne's last studio album, 2007's Best Damn Thing was an international smash, selling 5 million copies worldwide and spawning the monster hit "Girlfriend".

"What the Hell" may not be as strong a lead single as "Girlfriend", but it reintroduces Avril as the bratty pop tart we all remember, and I'm sure her fans (including myself) will welcome her back with open arms.

What do you think of "What the Hell"?
