No More Pussycats?
Perez Hilton is reporting that Ashley Roberts, one of the members of the Pussycat Dolls, ran from her London hotel and told fans that the band was breaking up.
Drama Queen.
Seriously, PCD is only a platform for lead singer and ONLY singer of the band, Nicole Scherzinger to embark on a solo career. Get over it Ashley, your 15 minutes are up.
The band opened for Britney on her first North American leg of her tour, and they were highly entertaining, but it was mostly because of Nicole's stellar singing.
We'll see if the rumors are true. They've been building for a while, since the release of their second album Doll Domination, last year. The album flopped unfortunately, not even selling 500,000 copies in the U.S.
Remind You of Anything...?
The new video for Shakira's "She Wolf" appears to have been inspired by Britney's recent tour, and her past performances.
The clip has Shakira dancing provocatively in a cage, with a flesh colored suit on that makes her look naked.
In Britney's concert tour, she performs her hit "Piece of Me" while dancing provocatively in a cage. And who can forget her 2000 VMA performance when she ripped off her suit and appeared to be in nothing but a see through glittery outfit.
Maybe Shakira needs to think of some original ideas.
Brit in Berlin
Britney Spears just recently wrapped up the European leg of her concert "The Circus Starring Britney Spears," and is now on a break until she kicks off the next North American leg in late August. Britneyspears.com just put up exclusive pics from the Berlin show, and they're great!
Brit's tour is the highest grossing tour of the year in North America, and could be the biggest tour of the year in the entire world. It has already grossed over $75 million.
Head on over to the site to check them out!

Sunday Night TV Line Up Secure for At Least Another Year
We can all breath easy, as HBO has just renewed three of their Sunday night shows, True Blood, Entourage, and Hung.
True Blood has become a ratings phenom for the station and it was only a matter of time before they OK'd a 3rd season. Entourage will see a 7th season, with more crazy endeavors to come from the Vinny Chace crew. And Hung, after a successful first season will beat the odds and hang on for another year.
Thank god, I was worried I'd have to start reading or something on Sundays...
Oculous Happy Birthdayo!
It's J.K. Rowling's Birthday today!
Then author of the Harry Potter series turns 44 today, and what does she have to celebrate?
Oh well hmmm, let's think. Since the first Harry Potter book came out in 1997, Rowling has sold a staggering 400 MILLION copies of the 7 book series, and is now the richest woman in Britain! In 2008 the Sunday Times Rich List estimated that Rowling was worth close to $798 million dollars. Since then, the release of the new movie Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince means that her net worth has probably risen again!
Of all people, Rowling deserves all of her success. Harry Potter is probably the biggest pop cultural phenomenon of the last 20 years, and forever changed the face of children's literature. (Who am I kidding, I'm 23 and just recently finished the 5th book...for the 3rd time.)
Congrats!
MUST LISTEN
T.I. has a new song out called "Remember Me," featuring the Queen of R&B Hip Hop, Mary J. Blige. It's all about T.I.'s prison sentence, and it speaks volumes about his fear of fading from the spotlight when he is serving his prison sentence for felony weapon charges.
It's a fantastic song, and packs an intense punch. Blige sings the chorus, and as with every song she's on, carries so much emotional intensity that it is almost scary.
This track will be in heavy rotation on R&B radio, and will probably cross over to Top 40. Well done T.I.!
Check out the song:
"Remember Me"
Red Hot Reunion
Chad Smith, the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers told Billboard today that he is hoping that the band will be back in action by October of this year. Smith has been touring as the drummer of super group Chickenfoot, but hopes to have the Peppers back in the swing of things soon.
Great news! The last studio album by the RHCP was Stadium Arcadium, and was one of the best albums of 2006, and sold nearly 7 million copies worldwide. High expectations are now set to top it!
Dance Track of the Day
Listen to this slammin' remix of Lady Gaga's international #1 hit "Poker Face," by Jody Den Broeder. It's definitely more club oriented, but the mix is great, and really makes you want to dance!
Check out the remix below!
"Poker Face" Remix
In Theaters This Weekend
Funny People, starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and a slew of other well, funny people, and it's been getting rave reviews!
It's good to see Sandler in something other than a ridiculous child's movie (Bedtime Stories, ugh) and I predict it will do very well at the box office this weekend!
The film also stars Leslie Mann, the scene stealer in as Katherine Heigl's sister in Knocked Up, who also happens to be married to the director of the film, Judd Apatow.

Twilight Troubles
Major drama occurring with the casting on the 3rd and 4th books of the crazy phenomenally success book/movie series TWILIGHT. Rachelle Lefevre, the actress who played evil vampire Victoria in the first movie has been replaced, and she is not too happy about it. Taking her spot is Bryce Dallas Howard, who played the odd mermaid thing in Lady in the Water.
Lefevre has been blogging about how pissed she is, but now it's rumored that both the actress and Summit Entertainment (the studio behind the film) are keeping quiet because the issue is going to court!
Ridic.
Still the King
Weeks after his death, Michael Jackson is still dominating pop culture news and the music world. Although I had said earlier that Demi Lovato had the #1 album in the US this week, it's M.J. who actually has the best selling album.
His 2003 best-of set Number Ones sold 154,000 this week, compared to Lovato's 107,000. The only reason why Jackson isn't #1 this week is because his album is too old, and Billboard has rules in place that says only recently released albums can qualify for the Billboard 200.
This blog won't go into the crazy details surrounding his death. For now we will focus on his legacy, and the fact that he was one of the, or THE biggest pop start ever to live.
World Domination = Taylor Swift
More good news for the Taylor Swift Conglomeration. Her latest hit single "You Belong With Me" has reached the top 5 on both the Billboard Hot 100 AND the Top Country Songs. This hasn't been done since Faith Hill did it with her mega-smash single "Breathe" in 2000.
Swift's album Fearless is currently in the running to become the best selling album of the year, and her former hit song "Love Story" is still lingering on the charts as well.
And she's only 19. FML
The New and Improved Whitney?
The first single off the long awaited and highly anticipated Whitney Houston comeback album has been put on the icon's website, and, ummm, it kind of blows.
"I Look to You" is the cheesiest, mushiest love ballad to hit the web in a while, and Whitney's voice is NO WHERE close to the amazing vocal prowess she use to have.
Sad, so many people were looking forward to hearing her belt it out again! Hopefully her record label will realize the negative response from fans regarding the new song, and they'll release something other than that god awful hot mess.
Head to Ms. Houston's website to listen to the song.

Good Girl Done Good
It's not very often when an actor or actress decides they want to "sing," and it turns out that they can actually, well, sing.
But in the case of Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester, it looks like she's got the chops to perhaps have a legit career. She's featured on Cobra Starship's top 20 single "Good Girls Go Bad," and she sounds good!
I mean, she's no Mariah or Whitney, but she does have a pleasant enough voice. She just recently signed a record contract with Universal Republic Records, home to artists such as Colbie Caillat and India.Arie.
Let's see if she's got the stuff to make it big in both worlds!

Turtle Boy Music Awards
Worcester Shakespeare Festival!
The Worcester Shakespeare Festival has already kicked off, and I heard this year the shows are amazing!
I was able to snag tickets for tomorrow's performance of MacBeth, and I am very excited!
If you're a Shakespeare fan I urge you to buy a ticket to one of the shows! It runs until August 23rd at the amphitheater in Green Hill Park!
More Paramore
Platinum Rockers Paramore have released their first single off of their upcoming second album. The track's called "Ignorance," and I have to say I'm a little underwhelmed.
It's a decent pop-rock track, but not as catchy as "Misery Business" or "CrushCrushCrush," two of their hits from their debut album Riot!
Maybe it will grow on me...maybe not.
You can download the song on Itunes or go to Youtube to see some live performances of the song. Let's hope that their upcoming album has some better tracks on it.
They were awesome live, though, I'll give them that.
Movies of the Summer
Even though we still have a month of summer left, I thought it'd be fun to hear everyone's pick for their favorite movies of the summer.
There have been tons of popcorn blockbusters, (Transformers 2, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, etc) but there have also been some great indie flicks flying under the radar (I'm thinking of 500 days of Summer.)
What movie do you think deserves the title of Best Film of the Summer?
Hootie's Back! Well, Kind Of
With country music, you're either a fan or you're not. Most non-country music listeners don't know what's going on in the country music scene, and usually they don't care.
But there are some things that are noteworthy enough to be shared with the entire music world, and the resurrection of former Hootie and the Blowfish front man Darius Rucker is definitely one of them.
Rucker's 2008 country disc Learn to Live became a #1 smash on the country album charts, and he has already scored two #1 singles off the CD. His third single "Alright" is sitting comfortably in the #2 spot this week, and could become his third consecutive chart topper.
It's amazing that he's been able to find so much success the second time around. If you were alive in the mid 90's you could not escape the Blowish, with songs like "I only Wanna be With You" and "Hold My Hand." Their album Cracked Rear View sold 16 million copies and helped to win the band the Best New Artist award at the Grammys.
It's great to see Rucker become a star in the country world, especially since the scene is dominated by white artists, with very few black musicians breaking through, and even fewer becoming big stars! Not only is he breaking records, but he's breaking down barriers as well!
Congrats!
R&B Singer Jay Sean Breaks in the U.S.
British singer-songwriter Jay Sean has scored 6 Top 40 hits in the UK, and now it seems like he's about to break in the states.
His new single "Down" is sitting at #2 on the Itunes 100 best selling singles.
The song is catchy, but just like every other R&B/Hip-Hop song on the radio, it's filled with voice enhancement technology that makes him sounds like a robot. It will probably sell millions...

Pink, Green Day Added to VMA Line Up
Two colorful acts, Pink and Green Day have just been announced as performers for the MTV Video Music Awards being held Live in New York on September 13th. The two artists join already announced performers Taylor Swift and Muse.
This is a pretty good lineup so far. Let's see if they can snag Britney for the show! It's been fairly well-known that MTV has been able to see their ratings improve for the awards show because of the appearances made by Britney in 2007 and 2008. (We all remember the disastrous performance of "Gimme More." And last year all she did was talk for 30 seconds, win 3 awards, and still it was a ratings success!)
No Nevah in Million Yeehs Yo Nahsty
Lily Allen is a tabloid fixture, and a lot of people (perez) trash on her.
She's awesome. Period. Allen's music is clever, sassy and fun. Her sophomore album It's not Me, It's You debut at #1 in the UK and Australia, and #5 in the US.
I think people need to give her more credit than she gets. Ignore her wild drinking antics and focus on what's important: The music!
Check out Lily's performance of her #1 hit "The Fear," a great acoustic rendition!
"The Fear"
The Best Rapper Ever
Vibe Magazine has been conducting an online survey asking people to tell them who they think the best rapper of all time is. They've been able to narrow the playing field down to two, and they are...
Eminem and 2Pac?
Who's voting for this? Eminem was able to beat out legends like Jay-Z and Biggy? Hmmm, interesting. 2Pac deserves to be in the final two, but I think there are better and more talented MC's than Marshall Mathers.
What do you think?
Who'd Have Thought He'd Still Be Around?
Rob Thomas has released his second solo album after having taken a break from his band Matchbox 20, and his new CD Cradlesong has been getting rave reviews.
Who'd have predicted that this middle of the road singer from a middle of the road band would still be around 12 years after first breaking onto the music scene?
I've listened to the new album and it's actually very good! Thomas is a very consistent pop songwriter, and has surprisingly managed to create a handful of songs that are quite good. I recommend "Her Diamonds" and "Wonderful." Take a listen and see what you think.
The Dysfunctional Life of Evanescence
Evanescence has had a rocky history ever since making it big with their debut album Fallen. Lead singer and co-founder Amy Lee has been notorious for being difficult to work with, leading the band to break up and change lineups many times.
Now, Lee is the only remaining member of the group, as everyone else has left. Old members Ben Moody, Rocky Gray, and John LeCompt have joined forces with former American Idol Contestant Carly Smithson, to create the "new" group We are the Fallen.
Smithson is pretty much an Amy Lookalike, and as much as her pretty pipes want to, they can't match the power behind Lee's haunting vocals.
It just goes to show that a diva is a diva for a reason. Amy Lee was what made Evanescence become superstars, and I'm confident enough to say that this new band will not achieve even close to the same amount of success that the multi Grammy Award-Winning group had.
Let's cross our fingers and hope that maybe Lee will just screw everyone else and come out with a solo album, that shows off her golden pipes!
Skate of the Art in Worcester
Everyone in the area should check out the Skate of the Art Exhibit that's taking place at the Dark World Gallery on Grafton Street in Worcester.
This art show displays skate decks that have been painted, broken and reassembled, and everything else you could possibly do to a board.
The show opens August 1st from 6-10pm. Check it out!

"Womanizer" among the Best
Britney Spears' former #1 smash "Womanizer" has just been announced as one of the 50 best selling digital singles of all time, with over 2.7 million copies sold in the USA. the Song ranks #39 on the list, and can now be considered her most successful single EVER!
Way to go Brit!
The song also hold the #2 spot for biggest leap to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. In October of 2008, "Womanizer" rocketed from #96 to #1 in one week. The song also broke the record for biggest one week digital sales of a song by a female artist, with over 286,000 copies downloaded in the first week.
Don't Phunk With the Black Eyed Peas
Today BEP breaks the record for a duo or group that has stayed the longest weeks at #1 on the Billboard hot 100. This is HUGE. They have now been #1 for 17 weeks!
The Peas single "I Gotta Feeling" stays put at #1 for the 5th week, while there former #1 "Boom Boom Pow" had occupied the top slot for 12 weeks before "Feelings" reign.
They break the previous record held by Boys II Men in the mid-90's.

Wait, What's That Guys's Name Who's Dating Britney?
For the first time in a really long time, it seems that our little Brit Brit is in a somewhat healthy, PRIVATE relationship.
We don't know much about Jason Trawick, her supposed new boyfriend, and that's a good thing! Britney needs to keep her private life private, and focus on what she does best. Entertaining millions of fans around the globe and make great music!
Ms. Spears is up for 3 Teen Choice Awards this year, so go to their website and vote!
Happy Birthday Skank, I mean Swank
Madonna Drops New Song
The Queen of Pop has just released her new single "Celebration" from her upcoming greatest hits album.
It's REALLY good.
I hope this song can revitalize Madge's career, although I think this is like her 4th greatest hits collection or something...excessive.
Head over to Perezhilton.com to listen to the song!
Dance Track of the Day
This is an oldy but a goodie. Kim Sozzi has been on the dance club music scene for years, and this remake of Heart's former #1 single "Alone," is BANGIN'. This sleezy take on a pop classic will make everyone jump up and get down.
Follow this link to the song!

Chart Chat
Some exciting movement on the Billboard charts this morning. We see Jordin Sparks' new single sky rocket from #25 to #10, becoming her 3rd top 10 hit in total. It's nice to see her single garner more success than the album (as reported yesterday her second CD debut at #7 with less than 50,000 copies sold.
The Kings of Leon collect their first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, as "Use Somebody" jumps to the #5 spot.
And more congratulations are in order for country star and American Idol alum Kellie Pickler, who scores her first top 10 hit on the country charts with "The Best Days of Your Life." Pickler is currently on tour with mega star Taylor Swift.

It's a bumma heights highhhh
For those not familiar with the hit Australian Mocumentary, Summer Heights High is LITERALLY one of the funniest shows I have ever seen, and I think many who have seen it agree.
The show follows 3 main characters, Jonah, Ja'mie, and Mr. G, all played by the same actor (Chris Lilley, who also wrote the show.) All taking place at Summer Heights High, the show takes viewers on an hilarious ride through Australian public schools.
Watch it. Love it. Obsess over it.

The Record Roundup
The Record Roundup is a weekly list of songs, albums, and anything pop culture that you should be aware of for the week.
This week, our list is topped by Shakira and her crazyridiculouslyweirdbutawesome new song "She Wolf." Here is the complete list of the other tasty little treats of this week.
THE LIST
1. Shakira's "She Wolf" - Probably one of the weirdest pop songs I've heard in a while, with creepy howling in the background, and a digitized Shak oozing her Columbian hotness all over the track.
2. Re-Vamped Billboard.com - The website that I, (along with millions of other chart followers) have grown up with, has completely redesigned and reformatted their layout. Equipped with an all new game that let's people choose which top 5 artists will make the biggest splash on the charts each week, the site is much more interactive and visually appealing.
3. Turtle Boy Music Awards - This is for all the locals looking to vote for their favorite Worcester musicians! Voting has already begun but go to Worcester Magazine online and click on the link to cast your vote!
4. Kings of Leon Announcing Fall Tour -Yessssssssssss
5. Jason Mraz close to breaking Billboard record - The laid back singer's monster single "I'm Yours" is still hanging around the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, even after 66 weeks on the charts. If the song can stick around for 4 more, he'll surpass LeAnn Rime's "How Do I Live" as the longest running song in Billboard history. You go Glenn Cocoa!

Why do People Think Kid Rock is Cool?
Seriously. It's a mystery to me.
Kid Rock has been able to survive even after his rap/rock rivals like Limp Bizkit and Korn have all but fizzled off. Even more, his last album, 2007's Rock N Roll Jesus went triple platinum, with sales totalling around 3 million. Howwwwwww is this possible?
Perezhilton.com reported today that he was quoted saying he thought Twitter was "gay" and saw no point to it.
He's a douche.
Itunes Update
Checking the top 100 most purchased songs on Itunes is a pretty good barometer to help predict what songs will be at the top of the Billboard charts that week.
As of right now, "I Got a Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas is still the #1 most downloaded song on the site. It has been perched atop the Hot 100 singles chart for weeks now, only having already unseated their previous monster smash "Boom Boom Pow."
Who'd have thought that BEP would be back and bigger than ever after Ms. Fergie Ferg embarked on her multi-platinum solo career? Not me.

MTV VMA's - Why Bother?
So the MTV Video Music Awards are slowly creeping towards us, but the question at hand is, why even have an awards show in the first place?
Now that the station plays practically no music and just shows trash on TV talking about dating their mom's or getting pregnant at 16, there is no point in celebrating something that was once a pivotal role in artist's careers.
Last year Britney took home 3 VMA's, including Video of the Year for "Piece of Me." I expect to see her far superior video for her song "Circus" be up for at least two awards this year. If this doesn't happen, shame on you MTV.

TV of the Week: True Blood Bonanza!
Now as I mentioned before, this blog is for music lovers and pop culture fanatics alike, so some of these posts will stray from the musical map.
On to Television: Since my roommates and I decided to splurge on paying for HBO and DVR, we have been pumped about our Sunday night lineup: True Blood at 9pm, Hung, at 10pm, and Entourage at 10:30.
The second season of True Blood has been f-ing bonkers! There is more bloodsucking vampire orgies and crazy shape shifting mayhem than ever. AND I LOVE IT. This might be one of the most interesting shows on television today. With crazy amount of underlying social themes, it speaks not only on the social injustices that our country is actually dealing with, but it mixes in a little vampire crazy, which everyone loves.
Hung, in its first season, has been slowly picking up, improving after the so-so premiere episode where we were introduced to Ray, a struggling high school basketball coach and teacher who resorts to whoring himself out to pay the bills. Now that he's more comfortable with the fact that he pleases woman for a living, he's a lot more fun.
The boys from Entourage are still back to their wild antics, but finally we see that Vinny is back on top. After watching his star fall for seasons, he is finally on his game, starring in Martin Scorsese's newest flick. The best part of the new season is the growth of Turtle, moving away from Vinny's drive into a man all his own; a man dating Jamie Lynn Sigler as a matter of fact.

While legal digital music downloading is still booming, physical album sales are the worst they've ever been.
As mentioned earlier, the new #1 album this week sold 107,000. (Thank you Demi Lovato)
This pales in comparison to the heyday of monster album sales, roughly dating between 1997 to 2000. During this time, it wasn't uncommon for MULTIPLE albums to sell over 10 million copies in one year.
In 1999 the three best selling albums all went diamond (10 million in sales or more) setting the standards for superstar albums. These artists were Santana, Backstreet Boys, and of course, Britney Spears.
Will the music business figure out a way to revive the dying industry, or have we seen the last of the 10 million selling album?

Mischa Barton's Problems: Does Anybody Care?
Recently Mischa Barton was admitted into a psych ward for examination. People are comparing her breakdown to Britney and her, let's just say, "dark period."
Only one big difference: People actually cared about Britney's mental breakdown! Spears was the biggest pop culture news story of the year; her supposed fall from grace would have gone down in the history books and the perfect example of how too much fame can screw with a person's head.
Luckily our Brit bounced back with a #1 song, album, tour and fragrance. BAM!
Poor Mischa, she's been swimming in the C-List fish bowl for the last 4 years, after the O.C. was canceled and her supposed drug use began.
Maybe she'll show up on I'm A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here, lord knows she needs work!
Backstreet's Back...WTF?
Ookkk guys, enough.
yes, I'm talking to you Jordan Knight. And You A.J. McLean.
For some reason this year, we've seen a resurgence of boy bands from pop music past that thought it would be a good idea to reunite in 2009 and go back on tour with new songs and a new image.
Stop, please.
The Backstreet Boys have announced that their new album will be dropping in October. I guess they thought they could squeeze out a couple more bucks. There last effort sold under 200,000 in the states...isn't that a sign that you boys should maybe throw in the towel?
The New Kids on The Block started another new world tour this year as well, who the F goes and sees these guys? They blow, Hardcore. They weren't even that great when they were actually popular.
Please, for our sake and for the sake of your children, retire, move to Florida, and never spike your hair with gel ever again.

Concerts in 2009
Unfortunately I have only been able to go to a couple concerts this year so far. (Busy busy busy!)
BUT, the two that I have attended were RIDICULOUSLY AWESOME.
In March I saw Britney Spears in Boston, a 3 hour extravaganza that had the Pussycat Dolls opening for the pop queen, and Spears performing a crap load of her hits.
I was also able to catch the No Doubt reunion tour, with openers Paramore. Both were amazing. The two female leads, Gwen Stefani and Hayley Williams were flawless when it came to vocals. And the funkdafied ska band that backed Gwen and her boys were on point!
Enjoy this video from the Britney concert (please ignore the screaming cameraman...)
Breaking Chart News
Congratulations are in order to pop tart Demi Lovato, who scores her first #1 album on the Billboard 200. Here We Go Again sold a measly 107,000 copies last week, providing us with another example as to how far the music industry has fallen.
As expected, Jordin Sparks collects her second top 10 album, as Battlefield debuts at #7 with just 48,000 copies sold. This is a huge drop from her previous debut, when she sold 119,000 of her first disc to debut at No. 10 in 2007.
We'll have to wait til tomorrow to see if the Black Eyed Peas can hold on to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, (this chart only tracks songs, not albums) as "I Got a Feeling" has been number one for 3 weeks.

Worcester Wednesday's
Another new segment is "Worcester Wednesday," when we feature a great local artist from the area. This week is Sam James, a Worcester native that combines a mix of John Mayer, minus the dbag-ness.
I was lucky enough to interview Sam James for the magazine I work for, and he's a great guy. Head to his myspace page to listen to some of his original work!
Here's a link to his page!

Today's Pick: David Guetta Featuring Kelly Rowland "When Love Takes Over"
This track is blowing up all over Europe, and has begun to make a solid impression on the pop charts here in the states. This club stomper is addictive, especially when hearing Kelly's vocals. Finally someone other than Beyonce can have a little success, am I right?
Here's a link to go check out an awesome live performance of Kelly and David.
